My name is Jodie (or Jojo if the little ones prefer). First Steps Academy via Happy Campers FDC provides Family Day Care in the Doreen-Mernda area of the City of Whittlesea. It is located near Hazel Glen Kindergarten and College. With experience as both a mother and school teacher, my Family Day Care provides:
- An organised, safe and nurturing learning environment
- Empathy, respect and positive behaviour modelling
- Intentional learning experiences and purposeful play-based learning
- Ongoing consultation, program development and professional learning.
Education: I have a BA/BSc, Grad. Dip. Ed. and Education Masters and have worked in the education industry for a decade, generally with secondary-school aged children and a focus on science education. This background has given me experience in: (a) understanding child development, learning and pedagogy (i.e. education theory and practice), (b) creating physically and emotionally safe learning environments, and (c) building trusting, respectful, and constructive relationships with children and their carers. Additionally, I am undertaking qualifications in Early Childhood Education and Care to build further expertise working specifically with the early years (birth to school age). I am also building my skills in AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language).
Family: I am a mother of a young child and aunt of two – a pre-schooler and a teenager. Together with my husband of over ten years, we have created a secure and loving home environment that meets our young daughter’s needs. She is a visibly happy, healthy little soul who is flourishing daily. We make intentional choices to promote her physical, cognitive, emotional and social development. We also share our home with a beautiful British Shorthair who is a much loved part of our family. We recently adopted a rescue Greyhound who has found her ‘happily ever after’ with us.
Philosophy: As a Family Day Care educator, I offer local families the professionalism of an experienced teacher and the hospitality of a stable family environment. First Steps Academy is modelled on the same kind of nurturing and growth-focused environment and experiences that I seek for my own daughter. It provides both inside and outside spaces designed to promote exploration and engagement and, ultimately, empowerment. I will help your child to take their first steps towards becoming a lifelong learner:
“Every person, at every stage of their life should have lifelong learning opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to fulfil their aspirations and contribute to their societies.”– UNESCO World Education Forum 2015
